Dedicated to Alaska Buzz

September 5th, 2008

OOtners:

A wonderful Friday morning to you all from overcast Columbus…although tomorrow weather is now looking like another perfect day for college football.

As you can tell in the headline…today’s theme is Alaska…I mean come on Alaska…I have lived in this country for more than 45 years, and I have learned more about Alaska in the last few days than I ever thought I would!!!

Did you know that the word Alaska is derived from the Russian language and means “Great Land”…or that the population is only 670,053 people?

Well you are going to get a dual lesson from the Buzz today and NOT ONLY because the new Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin is from Alaska (although that is one of the reasons)…but another is, and some of you already know, Betsy and I will NOT be in southern California next week to cheer on the Buckeyes against USC…the company has asked us to entertain a group of clients on an 8-day cruise to…you guessed it ALASKA!!

While I know we will have a wonderful time, and know I am not asking for you to feel sorry for us… we have already worked with the cruise ship to make sure the game will be broadcast on their TV’s… but my heart for those four hours will be in the coliseum…more on that game next week.

The Buzz was a respectable 7-3 last week and hopes are high for those headed to Vegas that I will be better this weekend, so let’s get right to it!

Incredibly Alaska is the largest state in the US, TWICE as large as Texas @ UTEP. The Longhorn’s are playing AT UTEP…why AT UTEP? UTEP went to Buffalo (and I’m not talking to play the Bills)… last week and got blitzed by 25 points…and while Texas was not a juggernaut they did win. The Longhorns are favored by 26.5 in this game and the Buzz likes them to score early and often…so some more love to Texas, the second largest state by land mass …Bevo runs wild Texas 52- UTEP Miners- 13

Alaska has MORE coastline than every state in the US combined!…I know amazing…you were probably thinking it was the state of Florida vs. Miami of Florida…as we say every year MY-Oh-My how the Florida school rivalries (Florida State-Florida-Miami) have fallen off the national scene for college football. The Buzz believes this year is NO different. Miami makes the drive north to play in the swamp…and the Gators are three touchdown favorites!! Three TD’s against Miami… Yes the Hurricanes are rebuilding…well at least that’s what they tell me…I mean are they that bad? Three touchdowns are a lot. The Buzz believes however that Florida is that good and Miami is that bad…take the Gators 41-17.

Alaska was purchased for .02/acre (When compared to Charlie Weiss salary that’s a steal)..in 1869 (the last time Notre Dame had a winning record!!!) The Irish, I know they have the toughest schedule in the world, open the season at home against San Diego State…yes San Diego State, who by the way lost last week to Cal Poly Tech..who I think is an on-line school, are they not?.. ND is favored…yes the Buzz said favored by 21 points…did the Irish even score 21 points last year all season! Optimism…just ask Lou Holtz, is high for this season…although the Buzz is a little more realistic…the Irish start the season off on a winning note…although they don’t cover…oh let’s say 18-8?

Due to strong leadership in the Governor’s position I’m sure, Alaska is the 6th wealthiest state in the US… which brings us to…you guessed it the poorest West Virginia. WVU travels to East Carolina…and the Buzz smells something here. ECU, coached by Lou’s son Skip Holtz is coming off a HUGE upset win over Virginia Tech…but how big really is that win? I mean the Buzz has always said Va. Tech is over-rated…WVU is favored by a touchdown and although the Buzz would like to call the Upset-Special…I’m just not sure the Pirates can pull off two in a row…The Mounties continue on and move to 2-0…but this will be a good game WVU-30…ECU-20

Alaskans pay no state or individual taxes (using revenue from petroleum…and amazingly provide the LOWEST tax burden on the US government…hello? the highest…oh you guessed it… hello California!!! You freaks who are the BIGGEST burden on the US government!! California @ Washington State…the Bears looked pretty solid in their win over Michigan State last weekend and while they do go on the road they are favored by two touchdowns. WSU defense is NOT good and although it will probably take Cal a little time to get it back in gear…the Buzz likes them to cover 37-17

The Buzz also likes Penn State to crush Oregon State 42-13; Oklahoma to beat Cincinnati, but the Bearcats keep it closer than the experts think..33-24; Wake Forest to beat Ole Miss 30-17…

UPSET-SPECIAL-OF-THE-WEEK…are you kidding me? Are there even any good games this weekend?… I loved and made a little cash off Vanderbilt last night…so let’s say Central Florida to upset last year’s media darlings South Florida…30-23

The Buckeye’s at home against O.U….and a 35 point favorite. Yes I know Beanie will NOT play as the plan is to rest him for another week before the big showdown in L.A….The Buckeye’s will split the running duties and I think you will only see Boeckman and Pryor at QB until it gets way out of hand in the second half…once again the Buzz does NOT see the Bobcats scoring. OSU will not show a lot on offense, but might throw a couple new formations and plays into the mix just so the Trojans have something to prepare for…

Really gang the season doesn’t get started until NEXT weekend…Buckeye’s defense dominates again…oh and the tailgate party opens early again…and we all get ready for the regular season game of the year next week!!! OSU-41 OU-0…sorry but almost the same score as last week! Who’s in the house? I know Debbie (West Virginia)…Russ’s wife Lara (Atlanta)…

Proud to be a Buckeye! Here’s to 2-0!

Go Bucks!

Maguire-Schneider Tip-Of-The-Week

September 3rd, 2008

Greetings Buckeye fans!  What a beautiful week here in Columbus and a lot of fun down at the ‘Shoe last week. We certainly hope our Tip made tailgating with the Pens fans more enjoyable (tolerable).  This week, we welcome another in-state competitor with the mighty Bobcats from Ohio University.  Now, we all know that everyone knows someone who attended OU (this writer) and has heard the stories about what happens in the thriving metropolis of Athens, Ohio.  At the same time, there are many things you will find at OU that you won’t find at Ohio State.  So we thought it would be a good idea to really set our great school apart from our neighbor from the southeast.

At Ohio St., High St. is filled with culture and different experiences, like the Wexner Center for the Performing Arts, concert venues, the Short North, and Arena District.  At OU, you’ll find 26 smelly bars.  On a game day morning at OU, you’ll find Pedon Stadium and 47 fans.  At OSU, you’ll find Butch and Paul’s Tailgate and 500 loyal fans waiting to be part of a crowd of 120,000.  In Athens, Hallmark infiltrated the town enough to make people care about Halloween. Here, not so much. In Columbus, people travel south on 3rd St.  At OU, Frank Solich travels east on Court St., which ironically in a one-way street heading west.

So for this week’s Tip, we remind you that if you ever find yourself frustrated with Columbus or for some unknown reason, maybe game day in this wonderful city, just think, it could be worse.  You could be living in Athens and going to OU.  See everyone at the tailgate and GO BUCKS!

Beanie’s OK Buzz

September 3rd, 2008

OOtners:

A beautiful Tuesday (Wednesday) afternoon (computer problems)  to you all from Columbus…I hope everyone had a wonderful extended weekend and recovered from the opening week of college football…

YES…1-0… while the Buzz did not have a bad weekend of prognostication…the OSU game, hey damn good…The Buzz said 41-0 and the game ends 43-0!!!

First thing you want to know I’m sure is what is the status of Beanie Wells…here’s what the Buzz knows. Yes he was still in a boot yesterday at practice, however it appears that he is day-to-day. So, while I wouldn’t expect to see him this weekend for O.U….what it tells me is that there is a very good chance he will be back for USC. As a matter of fact don’t be shocked if Tressel is quiet about this for the next two weeks and doesn’t tell anyone. But, no broken bones, no turf toe…both problems that could keep Wells out for quite some time.

The POSITIVES…ok you have to give it up to the Buzz on these…just look at what we said last Friday… Beanie over 100 (113 yards)…Boeckman throws for two scores (14-19 187 yards and two TD’s)…Prior runs for one; 52 yards rushing and one score (more on him later)…Tressel gets a new contract; 3.5 million a year…The defense both first and second team pitches a shutout; 43-0…more than ten freshman would play; hell there were five playing on offense during the third series!…and Butch & Paul’s tailgate would open back up at half-time which it did!!!! The Buzz only miss, a James Laurinaitis INT!!

…I know it was YSU, but the DEFENSE did give up only 74 yards and five first downs…including negative rushing yards for the entire game!!

I’m telling you, YES Boeckman is our QB and needs to be…but if you get a chance to watch Pryor play, gang he is going to be SPECIAL…reminds you a lot of Vince Young…when he runs he “glides” and it doesn’t even look like he is running hard!

THE GOOD

The Buzz said that Bo Pelini @ Nebraska would get his debut started with a win, which he did over Western Michigan 47-24

Missouri would beat Illinois, but the Illini would give them a battle, they did with the final score being 52-42.

Also the Buzz correctly picked Florida to win 51-17; they won 56-10…Gave some love to Texas to win by 34 and they won by 42 (52-10)…Said Wisconsin would roll, they won by 21 (38-17)…AND correctly said that USC would travel across the country and thump Virginia, which they did 52-7. And of course all the correct predictions in the Buckeye game.

THE BAD

Yes the Buzz did miss the UPSET-SPECIAL-OF-THE-WEEK…as Michigan State could NOT upend Cal…Mich##igan…well you just SUCK anyway and are in for a long year…and Pitt, yes you Pitt…everyone has you trying to challenge for the Big (L) East title…Bull####…you laid an egg against Bowling Green! All and all though the Buzz a respectable 7-3 for the first weekend

WEEKEND OBSERVATIONS

First of all don’t start telling me how bad the Big ten is…yes they lost key match-ups with Missouri and Cal..but the Big Ten was underdog in BOTH of those games I mean no one thought Illinois would upset Missouri…but they played them tough and MSU also played tough. Mich##igan…well again you are in for a long year.

You want to talk about disappointments for the weekend!!! the Big LEAST…Pittsburgh, Rutgers you BOTH get beat by non-BCS teams…AND the ACC, NC State, and Virginia are bad enough…BUT the ALWAYS over-rated Virginia Tech Hokies get beat by East Carolina…and CLEMSON, you were ranked #9 in the country and didn’t even show up against Alabama!!!…so don’t give me this Big Ten stuff until everyone looks around the country. The Big Ten has a few BIG games coming up in the next couple weeks so we’ll talk then!

Other weekend observations…Notre Dame is STILL undefeated…

GREAT to see some OOtners in the house!!! Shane & Lisa (Chicago)…Gary (without Sarah she went to the Zoo with their daughter) North Carolina…and BY FAR, yes Dana/Elizabeth I know you are coming from Switzerland…but Dan March (Zenny) my college fraternity brother…from Johannesburg, South Africa!!! Now that’s traveling to just have a beverage at Butch & Paul’s…who’s in the house this weekend!!!!

So we move forward…great to be 1-0…PERFECT that we fell behind USC in the polls!

Pictures from the tailgate are up and on the site…

Proud to be a Buckeye! Starting a NEW winning streak! Go Bucks!!!
